Smart Switch – Leviton

A little more on the expensive side but key to the energy efficiency controls and very cool home automation! These smart switches are great for controlling different zones and then linking motion automation to the switches, like using Ecolink motion sensor to ensure lighting is off when rooms are no longer occupied.

A great example of usage is our basement, we have 23 overhead can lights associated to four of these Leviton Z-Wave Decora switches. The switches are paired to the SmartThings hub and have a program setup to turn off after 45 minutes of no motion. Great way to save 207 watts all afternoon once playtime is over in the basement.

The installation requires some wiring understanding, the switches require the installer to extend the neutral to each switch in order to provide the radio power. Simple enough if you understand basic electrical wiring and have a good tester. The major difference comes when adding a 3-way or remote switch. The remote switch in this case is simply that, a remote switch that communicates to the main switch via the traveler wire.
