Motion Sensor – Ecolink

The Z-Wave motion sensor is great for monitoring and controlling an area that frequently is forgotten or using as home automation triggers. This motion sensor is easily paired with a SmartThings hub or similar controller and linked to lighting, outlets, or the thermostat.

Adding these motion sensors to the common areas in the home reduced our wasted energy a bunch. In the basement the motion is linked to 4 Leviton Smart Switches that control a total of 23 recessed LEDs. If no motion is detected for 45 minutes the lights will go off. Even with the kids watching movies this doesn’t cause an issue (they never really sit still). Upstairs the motion sensor is linked to 5 switches that control 12 recessed LEDs.

Finally, using SmartThings automation steps the combination of both having no motion for a much longer time will turn off all lights in the house, adjust the thermostat depending on season, and switch the fan to a longer off cycle. This is great for the summer weekends when we’re at the cabin don’t think about updating the thermostat program.
